A few years after moving to Jacksonville, Cesar Marfil thought in 2018 that the River City was missing what several U.S. cities already had for decades: A taco festival.
"I started the event with two partners, Jason Lewis and Zergino Roel Garcia in 2019, but we couldn't do it in 2020 because of the COVID pandemic," said Marfil, who's originally from Mexico and is very active in the local Mexican community.
Betting on the taste buds' love affair that Americans as well as the rest of the world have with tacos, the first taco festival took place at the end of summer two years ago at James Weldon Johnson Park (formerly Hemming Park), located in front of City Hall. It was an enormous success, surpassing the three partners' expectations. A bit surprised, the Mexican promoter remembers that despite being a rainy day, the festival was so crowded that the city police unexpectedly closed off the streets surrounding the park. According to Marfil, even most items from the food stands ran out by the end of the day.
The second taco festival will happen at Riverfront Plaza, Saturday, September 4th and it will feature more than 20 taco trucks or stands with other mexican treats. Besides the traditional mexican menu items, the food vendors will offer mexican style snacks and desserts as well as a bar setup with beer, margaritas and even a taste or two of tequila for the adventurous ones.
Additionally, there will be a special kid zone at the event, so children can have some fun too.
"There will also be a stage where different musical acts will perform and entertain the crowd," said Marfil.
Some of the artists that will share the stage that day will be the popular DJ Papi Disco from St. Augustine, who plays a mix Latin, pop and rap, among other musical styles. Another performance will be from a musical act from New York: Yael and Gabriel, a french-argentine duo who play flamenco and gypsy flavored numbers. Also, Caribe Grove is a quartet of musicians from various Latino countries who play Latin, rock and pop original and cover songs.
However, for other taco festival-goers, the most entertaining and interesting thing may be the Chihuahua dog race, which will surely be for some fun (and funny) times for all.

Después de pocos años de mudarse a Jacksonville, Cesar Marfil pensó en el 2018 que a la ciudad le faltaba algo que muchas ciudades de Estados Unidos ya tienen: un festival de tacos.
“Yo empecé el evento con dos socios Zergino Roel Garcia y Jason Lewis en el 2019 pero no pudimos hacerlo en el 2020 por la pandemia del COVID-19”, dijo Marfil, originalmente de México y quien es muy activo en la comunidad mexicana en la ciudad.
Contando con el aprecio del paladar que tanto los americanos como el resto del mundo tienen con los tacos, el primer festival del taco se realizó al final del verano en el James Weldon Johnson Park (anteriormente Hemming Park), ubicado el frente de la Alcaldía de la ciudad y fue un enorme éxito, sobrepasando las expectativas de los tres socios. Un poco sorprendido, Marfil recordó que aunque llovió el día del festival, estaba tan lleno de personas que la policía cerró las calles alrededor y hasta toda la comida en los puestos se acabó para el final del día.
El segundo festival se realizará en el Riverfront Plaza el sábado, 4 de septiembre y contará con más de 20 camiones o puestos de tacos y otra comida mexicana. Además de de la comida también algunos puestos ofrecerán aperitivos como meriendas dulces estilo mexicano y al igual una barra que vende cervezas, margaritas y hasta algo de tequila para los que se atrevan. Y habrá una zona especial para que los niños se puedan entretener también.
“Habrá también un escenario en el que se presentarán grupos musicales de diferentes estilos para entretener el público”, dijo Marfil.
Algunos de los artistas que tomarán el escenario ese día serán por ejemplo, el conocido DJ Papi Disco de St. Augustine quien toca mezclas de música latina, pop y rap, entre otros géneros musicales. Otra presentación musical de Nueva York será el dúo de Yael y Gabriel, una francesa y un argentino que tocan música estilo flamenco y gitana. Caribe Groove es un cuarteto de artistas oriundos de diferentes países latinos que tocan una variedad de música latina, pop y rock.
Sin embargo, para otros visitantes del evento culinario, lo más entretenido y curioso puede ser una carrera de perros chihuahua que se dará para la diversión de chicos y grandes.
