Cuban-American Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), who ran for U.S. President in 2016, visited Jacksonville recently to attend to matters affecting his constituents and spent a few minutes with Hola News to answer questions about his life and, of course, politics.

Hola News: What country would you like to live in besides the United States?
Marco Rubio: I can't even imagine it. Not really. There are many great countries, but I don't have an answer for that, because every country has something unique and special. Now, countries I've visited and really liked, imagine Panama which enchanted me, especially, the capital, Panama. Cartagena in Colombia was fantastic too. Obviously, Turkey is an interesting country. I don't think I would live there, but Istanbul's history is incredible. Indeed, there have been places that have really interested me.

Hola News: ¿Cuál le parece el mejor país donde vivir además de los Estados Unidos?
Marco Rubio: No me lo puedo imaginar. De verdad que no. Hay muchos países buenos, pero no tengo una respuesta para eso porque cada país tiene su cosa única y especial. Ahora, países que he visitado y me han gustado, figurate que me encanto Panamá, especialmente la ciudad de Panamá. Cartagena en Colombia fue fantástico también. Obviamente, Turquía es un país interesante. No creo que viva allí, pero la historia de Estambul es increíble. Sí han habido lugares que me han interesado mucho.

HN: What is your favorite movie?
MR: I like The Godfather movies. Well, I think the second one is better than the first one. The third one is not so good. But in general, they're all good.

HN: Do you think the U.S. embargo against Cuba for decades has hurt the Cuban people more?
MR: The thing is, there is no embargo against the people of Cuba. There's an embargo against the Cuban military and government. If the Cuban government allows a Cuban citizen to have a business, Americans can do business with that person. It's the Cuban government that won't allow it.

HN: ¿Crees que el embargo estadounidense a Cuba por décadas ha lastimado financieramente más a la gente de Cuba?
MR: Es que no hay un embargo sobre la gente de Cuba. Hay un embargo sobre los militares y el gobierno cubano. Si el gobierno cubano permite que un cubano tenga un negocio, el americano puede hacer tratos con ese individuo. Es el gobierno cubano el que no lo permite.

HN: What is your favorite food?
MR: Well, I like all Cuban dishes. For example, ropa vieja, vaca frita and... but my wife is Colombian, so now I eat sancocho and other Colombian dishes. Really, I eat a little of everything.

MR: Bueno, me gustan todos los platos cubanos. Por ejemplo, la ropa vieja, la vaca frita y… Pero mi esposa es colombiana así que ahora como sancocho y otros platos de allá. Realmente, como un poco de todo.

HN: What kind of music do you like?
MR: I like the music from the 90's. A little bit of everything, but more Rap music from the 90's. For example, Biggie Smalls, Tupac Shakur and other rappers from that era.

HN: Former President Trump agreed with the Taliban in 2020 to get the American troops out of Afghanistan this year and President Biden took them out, as agreed, but both have been blamed for the humanitarian crisis in the evacuation process. How would you have managed this situation personally if you were president?
MR: The moment to exit should have been based on conditions, instead of saying they were going to leave on a specific date. To have a scheduled date, but I wouldn't allow that exit moment to be sooner than our ability to prevent chaos from happening. I don't think the debate was to have stayed in Afghanistan longer. We were leaving already. If we had stayed there 10 more years, I can't say the result would have been any different in relation to the Afghan government's survival. The debate is more about how to have exited and a lack of planning.

HN: El expresidente Trump acordó con el Taliban en el 2020 sacar las tropas Americanas de Afganistán este año y ahora que el Presidente Biden las sacó como fue acordado, pero ambos han sido culpados por la crisis humanitaria en la evacuación de Afganistán. ¿Cómo hubiera manejado la situación usted personalmente si fuera presidente?
MR: El momento de salir debió basarse en condiciones, en vez de decir que se iban a ir en determinada fecha. Tener una fecha marcada, pero no permitiría que ese momento de salida fuera más pronto que nuestra habilidad para prevenir que un caos sobrevenga. No creo que el debate haya sido permanecer en Afganistán más tiempo. Ya nos estábamos yendo. Si hubiéramos estado allí 10 años más, no puedo decir que el resultado hubiera sido diferente en relación a la sobrevivencia del gobierno afgano. El debate es más cómo haber salido y la falta de planificación.

HN: What is your favorite sport to watch and to play?
MR: (American) Football is a sport that I'm passionate about. I'm a loyal fan of the Miami Dolphins. Not only do I like to watch the games, but also I enjoy seeing my son play the sport.

HN: ¿Cual es su deporte favorito tanto para disfrutar como para jugar?
MR: El fútbol americano es un deporte que me apasiona. Soy fiel hincha de los Miami Dolphins. No solo me gusta ver partidos, sino que también disfruto ver a mi hijo jugar este deporte.
